The University of Warwick

Men’s Hockey Club

About Us

The University of Warwick Men’s Hockey Club (UWMHC) is a well-established and prominent club at the University with over 100 members and this year, we aim to have one of the largest intakes of new members across the university. As one of the largest male sports clubs on campus, members will enjoy the benefits of being part of an extremely social and close knit family.

We have five hockey teams, of which all are competitive on a weekly basis, competing in the national British Universities & Colleges Sports (BUCS) league and the Midlands Regional Hockey League. The presence of 5 teams allows us to cater for all abilities, providing a positive sporting atmosphere for all members.

The club has access to some amazing high performance facilities including a top class water-based astroturf and a brand-new Sports and Wellness Hub. In addition to these top tier facilities, we also benefit from top quality strength and conditioning programs and coaching due to our high performance sport status. These tools have allowed us to train to a higher standard than ever before, and we hope to use this to further our development as a high performance club. Our progress has already been reflected in the promotion of our 1st Team into the Midland Prem division. In the coming season, we’re looking to level up across all aspects of the club, especially BUCS.

We encourage everyone of any ability to give our club a go, even if you have never played before!

  • We have 5 teams catering to all abilities, from complete beginners to high level players. Each team participates in a BUCS league on Wednesdays, playing against other university teams. These BUCS matches are often highlights of the season, promising some enjoyable hockey before our Wednesday socials. Each team also plays in a Men’s League each Saturday, playing against some local clubs. Therefore, there is plenty of opportunity to play hockey competitively throughout the season.

We are one of the highest performing clubs on campus, with Warwick sport classing us as a hight performance club for the 2023/24 season. 4 of our teams play in different tiers of the BUCS Men’s Midlands League structure, each with a high level of competition. All of our teams are in the Men’s Midlands England Hockey Leagues, with our performance team being in Midlands Prem.

With this high level of performance and competition across all of our teams, we aim to make sure that training is highly effective for each team, and all players have the opportunity to develop. We train twice a week on Monday and Thursday evenings, as well as having strength and conditioning sessions for the 1st team on Monday and Friday mornings. There is a lot of fluidity in our team selection, meaning players can move up to a higher team mid-season if they show great improvement and commitment in training and matches.

  • The UWMHC aims to create an environment that is first and foremost, centred around enjoyment and performance. As a performance club, we want to enable all of our members to compete at the highest level possible and we work tirelessly alongside Warwick Sport to make sure this requirement is met. In addition to this, we are continually striving to create a club that is more meaningful than any other, building a community that supports and provides for all members.

As a club we are dedicated to increasing the participation in our sport, and we welcome people of all backgrounds. The UWMHC also likes to give back to the community through a variety of charitable endeavours.

  • The UWMHC prides itself on its fun and inclusive socials and we welcome anyone, regardless of whether they play hockey or not. We recognise that the socials that we hold are a particular area of attraction for many members so if you only want to join for the social side that is no problem! We already have a number of purely social members that have got involved and it is a great way to meet new people and take part in some more exciting stuff.

Fresher Information

Fresher Information Pack

Joining a new club in a first year, or any year for that matter can sometimes be quite complicated. Below is a document that makes things a lot simpler, and if you are thinking of joining the club this is a must read! Our fresher pack should have the answer to pretty much every question on your mind, from preseason all the way through to what to expect at socials.

Training Times and Selection

Each of the men’s teams train twice a week (Monday - 5:30-7:30pm) and (Thursday - 7:30-9:00pm). If you are one of our performance athletes or you are looking to obtain a place in the 1st XI, you are expected to come to as many trainings as possible in addition to attending the strength and conditioning sessions on Monday (7am in the sports hub). If you aren’t in this group there is no pressure to attend all of these sessions but we strongly encourage you to get involved. The more you put into the club, the more you get out!

Weekly Fixtures

The UWMHC has fixtures on a Wednesday’s for the BUCS league and on Saturday’s for the regional league games. It is recommended that you attempt to keep your Wednesday’s free from lectures and seminars if you want to be involved in as many BUCS games as possible. This is because lectures may clash with game times and you may have to leave early to travel to away games.

Message from the Club Captain

“Hi, I'm Max Taylor and I'm the club captain for the 24/25 season. I'm going into my 3rd year studying physics. I play in the 1's as part of the performance squad. If you have any hockey related queries through the year, I'm the person to ask. I'm really looking forward to continuing to push the level of the club forwards to give our members the best range of hockey to get involved in! Joining the club has been one of if not the best decisions I've made thus far at uni, I can't recommend it enough!”

“Are you an experienced hockey player looking for a competitive university team? Maybe you prefer playing for fun and just want to meet new people. Whatever you are looking for, the UWMHC has a place for you!”
