Update: March 2024

As my tenure as VP comes to a close, it is time for me to sum up what we’ve been doing in term 2!

BUCS and Saturday league are over once again, with our team of the year (4s 4s na na na!) reaching the top half of the table, the 1s getting promoted in Saturday league, and the 2s and 3s being extremely close to nabbing victory. Our 5s have seen impressive improvements and competed in some exciting friendlies to boot. Well done to all our teams this season, it’s been a good one!!

Term 2 also saw a variety of socials - I for one will always remember this year’s varsity celebrations, the numerous circles and our annual hockey ball at Chesford Grange on the 9th March! It was definitely a night to remember, with awards, speeches, photos and dancing… not to mention the afters! Thank you to everyone who attended for the first time, the second time, the third and maybe even the fourth (we love you alumni!).

I now pass on my title of VP, along with the rest of exec handing over the club into safe hands. Thank you to everyone on exec for all you’ve done this year, and to everyone else in the club congratulations on a fabulous term 2!!

I will see you all in summer league: as Annabel would say, another day, another slay <3

Love Jordan and the outgoing exec xx

Update: December 2023

December has come and once again it is time to reflect upon the happenings of Term 1, and turn our attention to the New Year!

After Term 3 of the 22/23 year being filled with advancements across all teams in Saturday League and some phenomenal results in BUCS, Summer League matches had us facing the heat as well as exams, with many of us looking towards the new academic year with big ideas and high hopes for the new season. All of this was topped with another amazing Sports Ball and a great turnout from our club, as well as a Club of the Year award for the Men’s club - congrats guys!

Before Term 1 kicked off we held another annual preseason! Packed into 3 weeks, we trained, we socialised, we recovered in bed… as well as a fabulous preseason tour to Cambridge, where each team played their Cambridge university counterpart. Big thank you to our Club Captain Tilly and our social secs for organising these three weeks! We also welcomed 16 freshers this year, welcoming new faces to UWWHC! Our tasters and trials only brought more fresh faces to our club, expanding our ever-growing (social) circles and ensuring that our training and socials are even more fun and engaging!

We saw lots of great hockey as the term kicked off! Both in Saturday League and BUCS, all 5 (yes, we now have 5 teams!) of our teams have made phenomenal progress! The 1s are currently top of the league in Saturday fixtures and are performing well in BUCS, and are through to the next round of the ICG National Trophy. The 2s have had ups and downs in their BUCS games, however against some tough teams this is a testament to dedication, and their skills have shown through in Saturday League with some big wins, including 7-0 wins against Olton and King’s Heath. The 3s, despite a rocky start, have risen through Saturday League and secured some fantastic wins in BUCS, reaching the quarter-finals of the Midlands Conference Trophy! The 4s quickly rose to the top half of their league table, pulling out some phenomenal wins, including a 4-0 win against Atherstone and, with a new full time coach, the only way is up and up! Speaking of our new team, the 5s have massively improved in their skills, and are organising some friendlies to build their confidence in match play, led by our new 5s captain, Ellie - congrats! For more details, check out our termly roundups from our captains here on the website.

Socials have once again been a highlight of the club’s Term 1 in the 23/24 academic year! Circle numbers were pushed to their limits - how many chairs can UWWHC fit in their circle before someone is squashed by the pillar? Or, possibly worse, another circle? We also welcomed back our latest alumni to Skooldayz week 8! Circle was marked by a ghost of Christmas Past returning, an infamous Abba-inspired chant being sung on repeat, alumni reaping the benefits of a full-time job, and a certain former president and 1s captain out on a mission lose their voices! It certainly was a night filled with nostalgia, and thank you to all the alumni that came! We cannot wait to see you at hockey ball in the near future (9th March 2024: write it on your calendars! Information to follow…)

To finish the term we had our annual UWHC Christmas Dinner which was an amazing night filled with great food, some interesting singing (looking at you, Alice and Charlie), and various afters at various locations, followed by our mysterious DOM Tor. Thank you to Tamara and Jeevan for organising a fabulous trip to Cardiff, filled with fantastic nights out and wholesome day activities including bowling and crazy golf!

This was a long one (sorry I forgot Term 3), but I think that just shows how much fun we’ve had these past two terms, and that we have every intention of tearing through Term 2 with the same energy.

Lots of love,

Jordan and the exec xx

Update: May 2023

Term 2 has been filled with lots of matches, lots of socials and lots of alumni coming back!! This term saw the conclusion of our Saturday and BUCS leagues, where all our teams did fantastically well - well done to everyone!! Notable mentions are the 1s finishing second in their Saturday league, so close to clutching top of the league, the 2s finishing 4th in their Saturday league and the 3s finishing 3rd in BUCS! Well done to all teams and the 4s for scoring more goals and earning more points than last season!

Term 2 also saw our annual Hockey Ball, hosted at Chesford Grange Hotel, on the 11th of March. The event saw more than 160 members from UWWHC and UWMHC attend with lots of food, fun and fantastic company. Thanks to everyone who came, members and alumni, and we hope you enjoyed the evening! We also look back on Week 8 Skool Dayz where we welcomed back some of our alumni, definitely a crazy and fun night so thank you all for coming back!!

As term 2 comes to an end, we say goodbye to our outgoing exec and welcome our new exec! Thank you to everyone on exec, you have all been amazing and well done to everyone in the club for a fantastic season! Good luck to our new exec and for both our teams for summer league!! We can’t wait!!

Love Anika and the old exec xx

Update: January 2023

A new term has started and looking back at Term 1, we had an incredible term! With the 1s being promoted in their BUCS league last season to Midlands 1A, they’ve got off to a good start, with noticeable wins against Nottingham 4s and Loughborough 4s where they were able to keep a clean sheet. With both the 1s and 2s doing well in their Saturday League, being 3rd and 4th respectively, it is clear to see the progress of our performance teams! Our 3s have had a promising start to the season, with recent great performances that have led them to the quarterfinals of the Conference Cup this term! Our 4s have also had a great start to the season with so many new faces and a new sparked interest in forming a new BUCS team which is great to see! A few wins in the bag for the 4s also show a great start to the season!

Socials have been a great focus for UWLHC last term with great attendance to circle every week and a huge turnout for adoptions! Well done to all those who got adopted and are officially UWLHC magwomen! We welcomed back our alumni for week 8 Skool Dayz and it was so great to see so many of you there, we can’t wait to welcome you back for this term’s Skool Dayz on the 26th of February, a date to keep free in your calendar’s!! We also had our annual UWHC Christmas Dinner in December which was a great success and led to what was quite a messy night for some to say the least! This term we have our Hockey Ball on the 11th of March, and we would love to see as many of you as possible there! Keep your eyes peeled for a message from me this term about how to purchase tickets!!

That’s all from me but don’t forget to watch out on the Alumni Facebook page for some messages from me and thanks for taking the time to read this!!

Update: October 2022

What an incredible few months it has been for UWLHC and that is no exaggeration! Let’s start with Term 3 in the 21/22 year. After what was looking to be a tough season for the 1s, they persevered and played what was an absolutely amazing season and were promoted to Midlands 1A!! Such an amazing achievement from the 1s and they were so close to promotion in Saturday League too. Big well done to the 2s, 3s and 4s as well to what was a great end to the season for all three teams! We also had our first Sports Ball in 3 years towards the end of term which showed a great turnout from UWHC as well as an exciting award for us… UWLHC won Exec of the Year! Congrats to all those on Exec last year for what was truly an amazing year for us and for the club, especially those who contributed so much to another amazing reward, promotion to a Silver Performance Sport! This was something we had our hearts set on from the beginning of last year and it’s so great to know that our efforts weren’t for nothing so another big congratulations to all those who helped get us to where we are now!

Before term started, we had our annual Preseason that lasted for 3 weeks. This year before this kicked off we had our Alumni weekend which saw a lot of our recent leavers attend. We had good fun with an alumni vs current students match and rounded off the weekend with a trip to Smack (Abi Ojo I hope you’re recovered now…) and a much needed hungover brunch at Hart & Co. Massive thank you to all those who came for what I hope was a very enjoyable weekend! During preseason we went on tour to Nottingham and played a total of 3 matches, with the performance squad playing Trent 2s and Beeston and the 2s/3s/4s playing a mix of Trent 4s/5s/6s. Both teams won their games against Trent but the performance squad narrowly missed out on a win against Beeston in what proved to be a very tough game. All in all it was a great chance to build up some experience before term started once again.

In our second week of preseason we welcomed some new faces to the club, with a club record of 19 fresh attending! This was a great week of training, lots of circle and socials. Since preseason, we have had an amazing turnout of fresh coming to training, socials and trials with over 100 freshers expressing interest in joining! We hope that this year for us will go well and we look forward to welcoming all alumni back in week 8 (26th of November) for Skool Dayz!! We are also concluding this term with our annual Christmas Dinner on the 1st of December and our infamous Dom Tour between the 10th-13th of December! An important date for all of your calendars is also Hockey Ball which is happening on the 11th of March 2023 for all those who would like to come back for that! More info about that to come…

Thanks for taking the time to read this and I hope to see you all soon!!
